Termonfeckin

Evanna comes from a small village called Termonfeckin in County Louth, Republic of Ireland. This is where she and her siblings grew up and went to school. She lives with her parents Marguerite and Donal, along with three other siblings.

History of Termonfeckin

The serene and peaceful Termonfeckin is situated on the Eastern Shore of the county and has a beautiful beach only a small walk from the town centre. Termonfeckin figures prominently throughout history and indeed prehistory, which adds to the interest of its many visitors. Evidence actually exists within the record of Termonfeckin for the presence of settlements through the Bronze and Iron Ages.

The small villages origins are known as an important early monastic site. According to tradition, it was founded by St. Fechin of Fore in AD 665 and the perceptive antiquarian will find hundreds of remains connected with its religious history - an intact high cross, the base of a second cross, an inscribed cross-slab, the sites of two early churches, two holy wells, a souterrain, and the site of a monastery.

Despite the obvious wealth of early history, Termonfeckin is better known as the site of the Early Christian Monastery of seventh century date. Named after its founding saint, the place name translates (Tearmann Feichin) as the sanctuary of St. Feckin.

After the end of the 12th century, Termonfeckin evolved into a medieval borough. While little is known of its layout and size, it was important enough to have a Parish Church and two castles. Both of these castles appear to have been Tower Houses, however only one of the Tower Houses remains today.

The vanished towers site is still well known: it stood just south of on the river bank at the western end of the village just south of the bridge. It certainly still stood in 1791 but was gone by the time the Ordnance Survey of Ireland visited Termonfeckin in the late 1830s.

What it's like in Termonfeckin

Termonfeckin is also a place of great rural beauty, as well as a historic site, set within a valley covered by vegetation so much that the village looks like it is underneath a canopy of trees. The impression of an ideal landscape goes even further; the river running through the middle of the valley adds to the beauty of the village. Surrounded by fields and with many open fields within the village boundary there is a strong sense of being in the countryside everywhere in the village.

The original village is around a centre rather than in lines or scattered about, so most residents are within walking distance of everything. As a result, most people walk in the village, this creates plenty of opportunity for casual social interaction.

The village has a real sense of community from its good natured comfort. The schools bring together the youth, and at the same time their parents - and the churches are never left empty on a Sunday morning either!

There are six rural routes which enter the village, which all pass through peaceful countryside. They offer treasured views of the two village church spires or views of the mountains, coast and woodland. First impressions of the village are often made during these pleasant moments.
